The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Tyree Cardwell (ASN: RA-11866740), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Cardwell distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 14 May 1969 while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On that date, the company was conducting routine combat operations in conjunction with a friendly reconnaissance platoon near Thanh Phuoc when it came under intense hostile automatic weapons and small arms fire while crossing a small stream. The beleaguered unit immediately began to withdraw from the site, but sustained several casualties and was forced to return to the stream bed, leaving the wounded men behind. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Cardwell left his relatively secure position and maneuvered through the heavy volume of enemy fire being directed against him and reached one of his injured comrades. He then pulled the helpless soldier back to the main body of the company where proper medical attention was available. At this time, Specialist Cardwell hear another wounded comrade call for assistance. Despite knowing that he would be forced to run directly into the face of the enemy attack, Specialist Cardwell unhesitatingly rushed to aid his fallen comrade. During this advance, he was mortally wounded. His courageous actions were directly responsible for saving the life of one of his fellow soldiers and served as an inspiration to the remainder of the unit. Specialist Fourth Class Cardwell’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
