The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert H. Eaton (ASN: 0-558324), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy. On 11 March 1945, while elements of Company D Infantry were advancing in the vicinity of *** Germany, an enemy minefield was encountered. The resulting explosions wrecked two one-quarter ton trucks, one of which caught fire. An enlisted man of the company, his clothing soaked in gasoline from ruptured five gallon cans, was thrown unconscious ten feet from the burning vehicle. Although the burning truck contained several hundred rounds of fifty caliber machine gun ammunition and approximately twelve hand grenades, which could have exploded at any moment, Second Lieutenant Eaton saved the life of an injured comrade. His actions reflected great credit upon him and were in keeping with the best traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
