The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Richard R. Amos (ASN: 35859337), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy at Yokosuka, Honshu, Japan, on 3 December 1945. On this date, Private First Class Amos prevented the explosion of ammunition detonators which were lying in the mouth of an ammunition storage cave approximately fifteen feet from a burning building. With complete disregard for his own safety, he voluntarily covered the detonators with sheets of corrugated iron. This action kept the detonators from exploding and causing injury or death to nearby persons. Private First Class Amos’ outstanding courage reflects great honor on himself and the military service.
