The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Leveret R. Prosky (ASN: RA-18836627), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company on 21 September 1968. Specialist Fourth Class Prosky distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a door gunner aboard a troop carrying helicopter during a combat assault west of Plei Merong. His aircraft was designated flight lead and was therefore the first ship to go into the landing zone. Specialist Prosky provided effective and suppressive fire with his door gun as the aircraft neared the confined landing zone. He then gave rapid verbal instructions to his pilots as they hovered into the landing zone. He wisely directed the ground troops to exit the aircraft while it was still at a hover. With these troops safely on the ground, the aircraft returned to the pickup zone for another load of troops. As the aircraft returned to the landing zone, he again directed his pilots into the landing zone. With the troops safely on the ground, the ship began to depart the area, but was hit by an enemy rocket and burst into flames. Specialist Prosky bravely remained at his station, trying to help the aircraft commander to avoid the tall tree stumps as the aircraft settled to the ground. The ship then pitched over on its side and trapped him inside. Throughout the entire incident, he displayed courage and devotion to duty. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
