Headquarters, 1st Aviation Brigade, General Orders No. 6900 (October 7, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Two (CW-2) Paul E. Sonier (ASN: W-3156352), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade on 4 July 1968. Chief Warrant Officer Sonier distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a troop helicopter during combat operations deep within enemy held territory. A Special Forces reconnaissance team was surrounded by an enemy unit and requested immediate extraction. As Chief Warrant Officer Sonier flew to the area, Air Force tactical fighters expended their armament, giving close support to the beleaguered reconnaissance team. He terminated his approach at a forty to fifty foot hover above the team and directed his crew to lower a sixty-foot ladder to the team members on the ground. While hovering, his aircraft was subjected to enemy fire, but he calmly and resolutely held his position. With the last man finally aboard, he skillfully lifted his aircraft vertically through the jungle canopy and flew to a secure area. Through his courage and sound judgment, Chief Warrant Officer Sonier contributed immeasurably to the successful extraction of the team. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
