The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Two (CWO-2) Lawrence S. Webster (ASN: W-3156371), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company on 9 June 1968. Chief Warrant Officer Webster distinguished himself by valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1C armed helicopter during the extraction of a patrol in contact with a numerically superior enemy force near Dak To. Chief Warrant Officer Webster’s aircraft came under a barrage of intense enemy fire; with pinpoint accuracy he returned and suppressed the enemy fire. When a McGuire Rig extraction was deemed necessary to recover the endangered team, he flew his aircraft between the enemy’s positions and the unarmed extraction aircraft. This daring divertissement allowed the unarmed aircraft to extract the patrol without damage or injury. However, one patrol member had become separated and lost. Chief Warrant Officer Webster returned to the area of intense hostile fire to search for the missing team member, and abated only after his fuel became critically low. After returning to Dak To Airfield, he immediately re-fueled and re-armed his aircraft and valiantly volunteered to return to the area in search of the missing patrol member. This attempt had to be aborted because his aircraft had been severely damaged by ground fire. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
