The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Thomas P. Stempky (ASN: 0-5334475), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 189th Aviation Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 19 December 1968. Captain Stempky distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as flight leader of a light fire team of armed UH-1C helicopters, operating in support of an encircled long range reconnaissance patrol near Plei Djereng. On his first gun run against the enemy force, his aircraft received a hail of enemy fire which resulted in several hits. On a subsequent run, he received fragmentation wounds, but he continued to make his runs in support of the beleaguered ground unit. Only when it was ascertained that he ground unit was in a safe area did he return to his home field and seek medical aid. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
