The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Grover G. Ledbetter (ASN: RA-18953129), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company on 16 December 1968. Specialist Fourth Class Ledbetter distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions at Dak To. His ship experienced a tail rotor failure while hovering in the POL area. The helicopter spun 30 feet into the air and crashed upside down, while already on fire. He carried a Chief Warrant Officer observer to safety and with a great display of leadership directed a POL fire crew to the scene, and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, returned to the wreckage and freed the trapped aircraft commander. Seeing the co-pilot still pinned in the craft, he again returned to the aircraft. The co-pilot, delirious at this time, fought off his efforts. He calmed the co-pilot, guiding him through a small opening in the wreckage, and carried him to safety. With unfaltering courage, he once again returned to the aircraft and turned off all switches to prevent the aircraft from exploding and creating any further injuries to ground personnel. Through his selfless actions he saved three lives and prevented numerous possible injuries to ground personnel. Through his selfless actions he saved three lives and prevented numerous possible injuries to ground personnel. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
