The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major (Signal Corps) Garland B. King, Jr., United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a pilot of a UH-IB helicopter and member of the Army Concept Team in Vietnam, on 11 May 1963. Major King unhesitatingly volunteered to participate in a hazardous aerial mission to transport supplies to the 7th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam, while it was under heavy attack by hostile forces. Despite the dangerous tactical situation and perilous flying conditions, he performed this difficult task with fortitude, initiative, and unique flying skill. In the unarmed and unescorted helicopter, he delivered approximately three tons of supplies during five successive trips to the regimental area. Then, upon completion of the mission, he displayed courage, determination, and decisive leadership when the aircraft was subjected to intense gunfire, and despite a punctured fuel tank and a wounded crew chief, Major King succeeded in flying the aircraft back to the base. His heroic actions, flying ability, and devotion to duty are in the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
