The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Conrado Martinez, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Service Battery, McGregor Missile Brigade, United States Army Air Defense Center, at Fort Bliss, Texas, on 8 February 1963. Sergeant Martinez was in his quarters when he heard calls for help to rescue a small boy trapped in a burning dwelling across the street. He rushed to the fire and, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, unhesitatingly entered the burning home to evacuate the boy. Although he was repelled by the intense flames and dense smoke three times, he succeeded in catching the frightened, fleeting boy and removing him from the blazing building. He then reentered the burning structure and diligently fought the blaze until the heat and smoke forced his retreat. Sergeant Martinez’ prompt and heroic actions are in the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army. [This Award supersedes award of the Army Commendation Medal (1st OLC) for heroism on 8 February 1963, as announced in General Orders Number 104, Headquarters, United States Army Air Defense Center, dated 23 July 1963.]
