Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1929 (February 20, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Glen Lawrence Atkinson (ASN: US-56628667), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Atkinson distinguished himself by heroic actions on 2 February 1969, while serving with Troop D, 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a combat operation, Troop D came under intense enemy fire from an enemy bunker complex. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Atkinson began assaulting through the brush towards an enemy machine gun position. As he neared the bunker and began to place fire into it, Specialist Atkinson was mortally wounded. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the thwarting of the enemy force. Specialist Atkinson’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
