Department of the Army, General Orders No. 23 (May 20, 1963)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fifth Class Marion R. Meredith, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company B, 169th Engineer Battalion (Construction), Fort Stewart, Georgia, on 31 May 1963, near Sneads, Florida. When Specialist Meredith was driving along the highway and saw a blazing house about 200 yards off the road, he stopped his car and ran toward the burning dwelling. As he approached the area, he heard a weak cry coming from within the house. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he ignored the impending collapse of the structure, broke down the locked door, and seeing a limp figure on the floor, fought through dense smoke and flames to render assistance. Upon reaching the victim, he pulled him out of the house to a place of safety and discovered that the elderly invalid he had rescued was still conscious. Ascertaining from the man that no one else was in the burning house, he proceeded to administer first aid and continued his efforts until an ambulance arrived. Moments after the rescue, the burning structure collapsed. Specialist Meredith’s prompt and heroic action in this emergency is in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
