Department of the Army, General Orders No. 8 (February 25, 1963)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Tyrone M. Barr, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Battery B, 5th Howitzer Battalion, 92nd Artillery, on 13 April 1962, at the Seventh Army Training Area, Grafenwohr, Germany. During a calibration firing exercise, a round of ammunition exploded in a self-propelled M-52 Howitzer. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Private Barr unhesitatingly rushed past flying metal fragments to rescue members of the gun crew still inside the vehicle which was loaded with rounds of ammunition and enveloped in billowing clouds of dense smoke. Private Barr quickly arrived at the weapon, and with the assistance of one of the Battery officers, succeeded in removing an injured crew member from the turret. Private Barr’s heroism and deep concern for his fellow soldiers are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect the utmost credit upon himself and the military service.
