(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery), [then First Lieutenant] Thomas E. Young, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, *** Field Artillery Battalion, 34th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in September 1943, in the vicinity of *****, Italy. Captain Young was the executive officer of a provisional battery composed of A, B, and C Batteries of his battalion. Although under heavy enemy fire, he put the battery into position 1,000 yards in front of the Infantry to fire on enemy batteries. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Young, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
