The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Ernest Yost (ASN: 36540037), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 April 1945, in Germany. A member of Technical Sergeant Yost’s platoon was killed by enemy fire while attempting to carry ammunition to a machine gun which had been set up to provide covering fire for the withdrawal of the platoon. Technical Sergeant Yost, realizing the urgency of maintaining the gun in action, courageously advanced under withering enemy small arms fire, picked up the box of ammunition which the man had been carrying, and took it forward to the machine gun. His gallant action was instrumental in preventing numerous casualties during the withdrawal of the platoon. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Yost, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
