Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 61 (September 16, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Homer David Wynn (ASN: 20457328), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 31 July 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Wynn’s section, a light machine gun section, was attached to a rifle company during an advance. The rifle company was stopped by a very strong enemy position consisting of dug-in machine guns supporting each other by cross fire, machine pistols, and riflemen supported by artillery and intense mortar fire. The enemy had excellent observation and each time a platoon tried to cross a hedgerow they were stopped by the machine gun fire. Staff Sergeant Wynn personally manned one of the machine guns and firing from the hip moved from one position to another along the hedgerow to deliver fire on suspected enemy positions. In addition to harassing the enemy and keeping them pinned down, his actions inspired the men to make another attempt to advance. The personal bravery and devotion to duty shown by Staff Sergeant Wynn reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
