The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Earl M. Worrell (ASN: 33121272), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 April 1945 in Germany. As a company advanced toward well chosen and firmly dug in enemy positions, an officer and an enlisted man were wounded by sweeping enemy machine gun fire. As the company sought cover, Private Worrell and two other men volunteered to rescue the two wounded men, despite a warning as to the great personal danger involved. By a series of advances the three men reached the area only to find that the officer was killed. Continuing on to the enlisted man, they gave what treatment they could and painstakingly dragged him to safety. The courage and devotion to the welfare of his fellow soldiers displayed by Private Worrell reflect highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
