The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Herbert G. Worcester (ASN: 13054089), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 July 1944, in France. Sergeant Worcester as a member of a forward observation party was cut off from his organization by a fierce enemy counter-attack. Without hesitation, he began crossing an area through terrific hostile small arms, mortar, and artillery fire, in order to reestablish contact.
