    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Herbert G. Worcester (ASN: 13054089), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 July 1944, in France. Sergeant Worcester as a member of a forward observation party was cut off from his organization by a fierce enemy counter-attack. Without hesitation, he began crossing an area through terrific hostile small arms, mortar, and artillery fire, in order to reestablish contact. Although in the midst of considerable confusion and disorder, Sergeant Worcester remained calm Andin addition to making his way back to his unit, assisted an infantry group bring up direly needed ammunition. Still under intense fire, he assisted in evacuating several casualties to a medical aid station, after which he returned to his party. The personal courage, initiative, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Worcester reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
