Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 128 (May 23, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Sergeant Hard J. Woody (ASN: 34008584), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action on 17 November 1944, in Germany. While attacking an enemy town, First Sergeant Woody’s platoon was subjected to deadly enemy mortar fire. Despite heavy casualties, First Sergeant Woody quickly led his men forward, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy and clearing the town. Despite intense small arms fire, he continued forward with his platoon in an attack on another enemy town until suddenly pinned down by severe enemy machine gun fire. Displaying extraordinary heroism, First Sergeant Woody insisted that his comrade be evacuated first, a sacrifice that cost him his life. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Sergeant Woody were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
