Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 128 (December 19, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert T. Wood (ASN: 35274133), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 October 1944, in Germany. During an assault upon the Siegfried Line, the machine gun platoon with which Corporal Wood was serving as an instrument corporal, suffered heavy casualties so that when a new position was reached there were not enough gunners to man the machine guns. Corporal Wood voluntarily took over a gun, and although mortally wounded, refused to leave his post and continued firing on the enemy until his death. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Wood, at the cost of his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
