The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Fred F. Womack (ASN: 34012884), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division on 11 July 1944, in France. Sergeant Womack was assigned to duty as a Squad Leader with an infantry force which was assaulted during the early morning ours by a hostile counter-thrust spearheaded by tanks. When Sergeant Womack was awakened by the battle, he discovered most of the men in the area pinned down by the ferocity of the hostile fire. One of his comrades was manning an anti-tank gun single-handedly. Sergeant Womack voluntarily and without pausing went to the assistance of his comrade by bringing ammunition and helping him man the gun. Despite painful wounds inflicted early in the engagement, he remained at his post until the tanks had been destroyed or routed and the counterattack repulsed. The aggressive determination and heroic devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Womack reflect great credit on himself and the Armed Forces.
