The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Dewitt L. Wix (ASN: 34024299), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1944. Staff Sergeant Wix was serving with an infantry organization which was suddenly endangered by the advance of an enemy tank. The hostile tank was protected by a well dug-in machine gun which pinned our forces down and prevented effective fire being placed on the tank. With complete disregard for his own safety, Staff Sergeant Wix took his automatic rifle and a bazooka and advanced in spite of continuing enemy fire to a position from which he delivered effective fire on the machine gun, neutralizing the enemy position. With a comrade he then began to fire his bazooka at the approaching tank. As a result of his daring, a machine gun nest was destroyed, fifteen of the enemy were killed, and the enemy tank was forced to withdraw. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Wix, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
