The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Robert A. Wittstock (ASN: 37441482), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving in the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 January 1945 in France. During a heavy fire fight with the enemy one of the men in Sergeant Wittstock’s company was seriously wounded in both legs within twenty-five yards of enemy lines and was unable to move. Despite the desperate fighting and heavy artillery fire falling the area Sergeant Wittstock crawled out into contested territory and successfully dragged the wounded man to the protection of a foxhole where he received prompt medical treatment. The great courage displayed by Sergeant Wittstock in disregarding personal safety reflects highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
