The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Luther H. Winstead (ASN: 20457031), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 20 July 1944, in France. After an advance of 200 yards, Technical Sergeant Winstead’s platoon was pinned down by an enemy machine gun dug-in in a thick hedgerow and protected by enemy riflemen. Technical Sergeant Winstead voluntarily led a patrol forward under extremely heavy fire with the mission of outflanking and destroying the enemy position, allowing the platoon to continue their advance. During this mission, Technical Sergeant Winstead was killed. The loyal devotion to duty and courage shown by Technical Sergeant Winstead reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
