The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Carl Wimpey (ASN: 14134565), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945 in Germany. When his company was held up by intense fire from an enemy machine gun position during the assault across the Rhine River, Private Wimpey voluntarily crawled forward to neutralize the position realizing that the success of his unit depended largely on seizing the objective before dawn. Reaching a point only a few yards from the enemy emplacement under a storm of fire directed at him by the desperate defenders, he threw a hand grenade and quickly followed it by fire from his rifle, effectively silencing the weapon and its crew. The daring courage exhibited by Private Wimpey reflects highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
