The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Verlon A. Williams (ASN: 35590801), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944, in France. Corporal Williams was serving as a member of a forward observer party giving artillery support to an infantry unit forcing the crossing of a well defended river. When the commanding officer of the group was seriously wounded, Corporal Williams and another comrade fearlessly exposed themselves to administer first aid to the fallen office and evacuate him under heavy enemy fire to an area in the rear where medical assistance was procured. He then returned without hesitation to his post. The outstanding courage displayed by Corporal Williams was an inspiration to his fellow soldiers and his gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
