The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Harry Dashiells Mills, Jr. (ASN: US-51672503), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Mills distinguished himself by heroic actions as a member of Battery A, 7th Battalion, 11th Field Artillery, on 6, 7 and 8 June 1969, while serving as a forward observer attached to Company B, 3d Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While established at Fire Support Base CROOK, elements of Company B came under an intense enemy mortar and rocket attack, which was followed by a massive ground assault. Immediately, Specialist Mills maneuvered through the barrage of exploding projectiles to an observation tower and began to call in artillery fire on the hostile positions. Although the hostiles concentrated their fire on the observation tower, Specialist Mills, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to the hail of fire as he made the necessary adjustments in the artillery fire. Throughout three days’ contact, Specialist Mills coordinated the fires of five separate artillery batteries on the aggressor forces. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the thwarting of the hostile force. Specialist Mills’ bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
