The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Norman R. Wheelock (ASN: 0-462622), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 312th Field Artillery Battalion, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944 in France. While his battalion was supporting an infantry assault and serious casualties were being inflicted on the forward infantry elements due to enemy mortar fire, Lieutenant Wheelock unhesitatingly carried a field radio into the forward zone, completely disregarding his own safety and successfully directed artillery fire which enabled the infantry to maneuver to another position from which to continue the assault. For his gallant actions in the face of great hazard Lieutenant Wheelock reflects highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
