Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 127 (December 18, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John F. Weekley (ASN: 35228762), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 October 1944, in Germany. During a severe concentration of enemy artillery fire, a mortar observer was seriously wounded in the leg. Private First Class Weekley crawled through the heavy artillery fire to the wounded man, rendered first aid and then dragged his wounded comrade one hundred yards across an exposed hill. With the assistance of another man he then moved the wounded observer an additional two hundred yards to the company command post from which he was evacuated. Although he was on the point of exhaustion, Private First Class Weekley made his way back to the observation post to secure the observer’s radio and field glasses. Private First Class Weekley’s heroism reflects the highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces.
