The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Clayborn P. Wayne (ASN: 0-351193), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 September 1944, in Holland. Captain Wayne was serving as Executive Office of an Infantry Battalion engaged in offensive action against the enemy. The vehicle in which Captain Wayne was riding was the leading vehicle of a column, and when heavy enemy artillery fire fell on the column, Captain Wayne was painfully wounded. Despite the pain of his wounds, and the danger, he remained at his post. Only after his superiors had been completely advised of the situation and all of his command directed to positions of safety, would Captain Wayne allow himself to be evacuated. His courage and loyalty to the men of his command are worthy of high praise. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Wayne, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
