The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert D. Warren (ASN: 37358847), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 March 1945, near Livergano, Italy. On this day the first platoon was defending practically isolated key positions near Luca, Italy. Private First Class Warren, occupying a dug out on the flank, was ordered to hold this vital ground at all costs. At about 2200 hours a heavily armed fifteen-man enemy raiding party attacked the platoon positions. Two enemy soldiers moved on Private First Class Warren’s post with machine pistols blazing. Unmindful of their overwhelming fire power, Private First Class Warren bravely returned their fire and, in the fire fight that ensued, he was severely wounded in the chest and stomach and his right arm was fractured. Seeing this, the enemy began to close in but Private First Class Warren, although suffering painfully, shifted his rifle to his left arm and, with deliberate aim, killed both his attackers, one enemy soldier falling only three feet from his foxhole. His bold action aided in beating off this raiding party and the enemy fled in complete disorder. Private First Class Warren’s superb courage and grim determination reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
