Headquarters, 10th Mountain Division, General Orders No. 104 (June 11, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Raleigh Warner, Jr. (ASN: 0-528844), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 10th Mountain Division Artillery, 10th Mountain Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 April 1945, near Governele, Italy. Accompanying a task force spearheading the Division’s drive from their bridgehead on the Po River, First Lieutenant Warner rendered invaluable service in maintaining liaison between the commander and the various units of the force. When the commander and a squad of riflemen approached the newly won town, they were pinned down by sniper fire from a concealed position. Without regard for his own life, First Lieutenant Warner left cover and walked across the exposed roadway in order to draw fire from the sniper so that his position could be located. His cool and courageous action was an inspiration to all members of the party and enabled the commander to resume his advance. First Lieutenant Warner has well earned the highest commendation and praise for his heroic deeds, which reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
