The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant William T. Wardell, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 31 January 1944. Volunteering to repair vital wire lines between his Infantry Company Command Post and forward elements, Technical Sergeant Wardell and an assistant advanced 400 yards under intense mortar, artillery and automatic weapons fire which fell but a few feet away. His assistant was wounded, and Sergeant Wardell dragged him to a covered position and rendered first aid. He then crawled forward another 250 yards and repaired a break in the line. After insuring that communications were reestablished at the forward platoon, Sergeant Wardell returned through continuing fire to assist his wounded comrade to the rear. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
