The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Charles Vlahos (ASN: 32139763), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 339th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division, in action on 13 May 1944 in Italy. During the opening phase of a large attack against strong enemy positions, Sergeant Vlahos led his machinegun section over difficult terrain through enemy mine fields and across river, under heavy artillery fire, to reach the objective without loss of men or equipment. When their machinegun was disabled by enemy fire, Sergeant Vlahos deployed his gun crew as riflemen and supervised and checked the section in repulsing numerous enemy counterattacks. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
