The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Theodore Veltman (ASN: 32808378), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 October 1944, in Germany. Corporal Veltman was assigned to duty as an instrument operator with a field artillery battalion giving fire support to an Infantry Regiment, and was serving as a member of a forward observer team. When the forward observer became a casualty, Corporal Veltman remained at his post despite direct fire from tanks and enemy artillery and carried on until he was mortally wounded. Although Corporal Veltman lost his life in this courageous devotion to duty, the effective fires which he directed broke up a determined enemy counterattack and undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades in arms. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Veltman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
