Varano, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 6th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, in March 1945. Private Varano, a Medical Aidman, as part of a rescue detail crossed a bridge under heavy artillery fire and machine gun strafing to administer first aid to a wounded man. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Varano, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
