The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Robert E. Casselbury (ASN: 19176457), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 July 1944, in France. Private Casselbury was assigned to duty as a rifleman in an infantry unit which was engaged in an assault on a heavily fortified enemy strongpoint. The casualties suffered by our attacking forces were many and the wounded greatly outnumbered available litters and regularly assigned litter bearers. Private Casselbury, with two comrades, improvised a litter and began to evacuate a seriously wounded man to a place out of the danger area where he could be ministered to, at an aid station. The hostile fire increased to such a degree that the two comrades assisted Private Casselbury jumped into a sheltered position in order to escape the deadly fire. With unselfish determination, Private Casselbury remained with the wounded man and carried him alone and unaided to the rear. His unselfish action performed with no thought of his own safety was an inspiration to those around him. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Casselbury, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
