The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William K. Vannell (ASN: 32366399), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944, in France. Assigned to duty as a Browning Automatic Rifleman with an infantry element assaulting across a canal, Private Vannell was severely and painfully wounded in both legs. Despite his handicaps, Private Vannell opened fire at point blank range from the hip, and his accurate use of his weapon obliterated an enemy machine gun nest, killing some of the crew and forcing the remaining members to surrender, one of which was a German officer. He did not seek first aid until he learned the enemy strong point was reduced and the prisoners secured. The personal gallantry and heroic devotion to duty displayed by Private Vannell reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
