The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Hugh Carey, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 July 1863, while serving with Company E, 82d New York Infantry, in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Sergeant Carey captured the flag of the 7th Virginia Infantry (Confederate States of America), being twice wounded in the effort.
