Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 120 (December 12, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James R. Van Winkle (ASN: 35808520), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 November 1944, in Germany. During an attack against the enemy, the company with which Sergeant Van Winkle was serving as Communications Sergeant became disorganized when radio communications between the platoons and the company command post failed to operate. Without hesitation, Sergeant Van Winkle volunteered his services as a messenger. During the period or reorganization, he continually made trips to the various platoons with messages, exposing himself to the enemy artillery fire which was falling in the area. As a result of Sergeant Van Winkle’s unselfish devotion to duty, the company commander was able to reorganize, continue the attack, and successfully complete the operation with a minimum of casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Van Winkle, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
