    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fourth Grade Franklin W. Van Buren (ASN: 32852168), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment, 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 March 1945 in the vicinity of * * *, Germany. While treating casualties on the field of combat, Technician Fourth Grade Van Buren was wounded twice by small arms fire. In spite of his wounds, he continued with his work because the other two aid men with the company had been evacuated as casualties, As he was administering medical aid to a seriously wounded soldier, Technician Fourth Grade Van Buren was struck again by small arms fire and mortally wounded. His unselfish devotion to duty and utter disregard for his own personal safety were in accordance with the highest military traditions.
