Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 103 (November 17, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Peter J. Vaccaro (ASN: 32519168), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 October 1944, in Germany. As part of the preparation for an assault on the Siegfried Line, it was necessary to bridge a river within approximately three hundred fifty yards of enemy pillboxes and within small arms range of numerous enemy snipers, who were in positions on the far shore. During the entire five hour period while engaged in this construction Corporal Vaccaro and his comrades were subjected to heavy enemy artillery, mortar, and small arms fire. Despite the heavy fir and the fact that the enemy had excellent observation of the position, Corporal Vaccaro gallantly remained at his post. The completion of this bridge was vital and the determination and courage exhibited by Corporal Vaccaro and the other members of the party resulted in its completion, a valuable contribution to the success of the subsequent assault on the vaunted Siegfried Line. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Vaccaro, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
