The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Leonard L. Unwin, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 34th Infantry Division, in action on 5 April 1944, in the vicinity o9f Isola Bella, Italy. When a fellow soldier was seriously wounded by an enemy mortar shell, Private First Class Unwin, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, crawled a distance of 500 yards under direct enemy observation and under mortar and machine gun fire to secure a stretcher. He returned over the same hazardous route and safely evacuated the soldier. Private First Class Unwin’s courageous action in the face of grave danger was instrumental in saving the life of his comrade and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
