The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private] Jose C. Ulibarri (ASN: 39553943), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 823d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period 10 October 1944 to 11 October 1944, in Germany. Corporal Ulibarri, a cannoneer, distinguished himself by heroism when he and his comrades made a material contribution in stopping a large scale counterattack. In order to be able to cover two routes of approach with their gun, Corporal Ulibarri and his comrades voluntarily placed their gun in an exposed position. They remained gallantly at their post after heavy fire was received in order to destroy seven enemy tanks and repel a counterattack at the risk of their lives. When his gun was finally knocked out of action, Corporal Ulibarri immediately went over to assist another gun crew. The courage, aggressiveness, and indomitable fighting spirit exhibited by Corporal Ulibarri reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
