The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Hubert Louis Lee (ASN: RA-6283368), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 16 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that date his company was attacking enemy positions along the Naktong River. The advance of his platoon was halted by intense fire from a hostile machine gun emplacement. With total disregard for his personal safety, he intrepidly dashed forward and destroyed the machine gun position with hand grenades. During the same engagement, a light artillery piece inflicted several casualties upon his platoon. Again exposing himself to the withering enemy fire he single-handedly assaulted this second enemy emplacement and destroyed it with rifle and grenade fire. His heroic actions enabled his pinned down platoon to resume its advance with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Lee reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
