The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Willis Marion True, Jr. (ASN: 14163684), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant True was serving as a squad leader with an infantry organization and had been given the mission of using his squad to clear a woods and road of enemy troops. Upon emerging into the area, his squad was subjected to intense hostile machine gun and small arms fire, which inflicted casualties. Completely disregarding the danger, Staff Sergeant True exhorted his men to follow and led the attack against the hostile position. Staff Sergeant True was killed during this engagement, but the inspiration of his leadership caused his men to continue the attack vigorously until the opposition had been overcome. The indomitable fighting spirit and conspicuous daring exhibited by this gallant non-commissioned officer reflect high credit on Staff Sergeant True and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
