The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Orve J. Troyer, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action on the Allied FIFTH Army’s Anzio beachhead south of Rome on 31 January 1944. A mortar section sergeant, Sergeant Troyer and his unit were ambushed as they advanced across a field to join other elements of their outfit. Although wounded by a shell fragment, he organized his section as riflemen and, disregarding German machine gun fire, conducted fire for an hour and a half from an exposed position, forcing the enemy to withdraw. Sergeant Troyer personally killed three Germans during this actions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
