The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant [then Sergeant] Kenneth C. Troumbly (ASN: 37573070), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Cannon Company, 276th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany. Near Furatenhausen, Germany, on 17 March 1945, when a company of infantry was halted by intense enemy mortar and automatic weapons fire, First Sergeant Troumbly moved from his covered position so that he could direct cannon fire on those hostile positions. Crawling 500 yards over open terrain, under heavy enemy fire, he reached a good observation point. He remained there for five hours, exposed to enemy observation, and directed such accurate and effective fire that the enemy positions were silenced allowing the infantry company to resume its attack and successfully complete its mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Sergeant Troumbly, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
