The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private James I. Trick (ASN: 33873738), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 November 1944, in Germany. Private Trick’s heavy machine gun squad was moving to a new position when the enemy, only 200 yards away, began a determined counterattack, using mortars and artillery most effectively. The small amount of ammunition that has just been move to the new gun position by the machine gun squad was soon exhausted. Private Trick, realizing this difficult situation, and not waiting for orders, ran through the enemy barrage to the ammunition supply point and returned with the desperately needed ammunition. Later, when the other members of his squad failed to go for more ammunition because of the heavy enemy fire, Private Trick bravely set out again. He became missing when returning with the additional ammunition. Through his gallantry, devotion to duty and utter disregard for his own safety Private Trick reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
