The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant David D. Townsend, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944, in France. Sergeant Townsend, subjected to severe mortar and artillery fire by the enemy, directed effective artillery fire on enemy dispositions, thereby contributing materially to the success of the general advance of our forces. His untiring efforts in the face of violent enemy opposition displayed courage and initiative which was outstanding. Sergeant Townsend remained in his precarious position until he was fatally wounded, despite the fact that the enemy had obviously located him and was laying down continuous fire in an effort to force him to withdraw. The bravery and resourcefulness exhibited by this gallant solder will long be an inspiration to his comrades.
